i'm not sure if it's the paprika and spices or the MSG that make Johnny's so good. umami is our friend. some japanese dude figured out how to make powdered umami by processing kombu into MSG over a decade ago. brilliant
my son turned me on to johnny's a few years back. seasoning salts have always disappointed me. Lawry's is good say on a crisp radish or celery, but add it to any dish and the taster will yawn and not be impressed. the ingredients read... "fine crystalline salt, monosodium glutamate, pepper, paprika, granulated garlic and spices." made in tacoma washington where paprika is evidently not considered a spice. so Johnny's comes to the plate with the powerful designated hitter MSG. and that's cool with me because i have no problem with MSG. i applaud our local specialty food store for selling it bulk. some folks have bad reactions to MSG but a little research reveals those folks make up a tiny minority.
