old barns like ours were simply filled with loose hay after harvest so they just needed to be a big open dry space. by adding raised lofts for hay bail storage we have lots of space above for storage and plenty of room below for stalls, equipment storage, work space, etc. the lofts are also a structural benefit, as the joist systems are sheathed with tongue and groove plywood (or car decking) and tie together the existing framing for a more stable barn.
